Your guide to independent adventurous
family travel in Europe

I’m Bea (pronounced Bee), a passionate travel expert (I’ve been working in the travel and outdoor industry since 2006) sharing all I’ve learnt about crafting immersive, adventurous family travel – mostly without needing a car.

I started Wild Bee Outdoors after decades spent planning my own trips; always seeking the best routes accessible by train and public transport. I understand how challenging it can be to:

  • Gather all the necessary information (some of it in a language you may not speak!)
  • Piece it together for a seamless itinerary for activities such as hut to hut hiking, multi-day cycling, or exploring charming towns and vibrant islands.
  • Feel confident that your itinerary aligns with the activity or technical level suitable for your group – whether that’s adult friends, kids, grandparents, or all three (I’ve done them all)!

I bring local insight, route notes and maps, travel tips and practical advice to help you travel independently, confidently, and sustainably – exploring the Alps and beyond at your own pace, mostly without needing a car. If you’re curious about what inspired this blog and why it can help with your own adventures, you can read more here.

A family of three stands on a rocky hiking trail on a hut to hut hike with the iconic Tre Cime di Lavaredo peaks towering behind them under a bright blue sky. The two children, dressed in colorful striped leggings and backpacks, smile alongside an adult wearing a wide-brimmed hat and hiking gear. The lush alpine meadow in the foreground contrasts with the rugged gray rock formations in the background.

The image of a PDF or leaflet. On the front page is a picture of green fields and a mountain behind, with the text "A Guide to Hut to Hut Hiking in Austria" as a title, with a bullet point list underneath saying "What to pack, Useful phrases, Austrian cuisine, Mountain hut etiquette, Hiking Safety". Behind the first page is the image of some of the second page. The title of the second page is "What to Pack" but the rest of the text is too small to read.

My favourite family adventure travel destinations

A child and an adult on bikes smile as they ride along a paved path bordered by vibrant green fields. Behind them, a picturesque village sits at the foot of a densely forested mountain range under a clear sky.

Austria

A stunning sunset view of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo peaks in the Dolomites, with the moon visible in the sky and soft orange and pink clouds stretching across the horizon. The rugged terrain and grassy patches create a dramatic backdrop for a hut-to-hut hike in the Dolomites with kids.

Italy

A hiker descends a dirt path flanked by vibrant green meadows and wildflowers, heading toward the quaint village of Granges de la Vallée Étroite.

France

Two hikers walk under blooming purple flowers and lush trees near Finca Son Mico on a rural Mallorca trail—this vibrant path is part of a family-friendly hike in the Tramuntana mountains.

Disclaimer

I’m not a mountain guide, just a passionate hiker and cyclist. I want you to use the information I provide here, but please, always double-check your plans. Trails can change and snow can stick around even in the height of summer. Take ownership of your adventure. Do your homework, plan your routes carefully, double check the weather forecast, and never head out unprepared. Wear sturdy, waterproof footwear, pack essentials like maps, navigation apps, food, water, cash, a phone and a battery pack. The mountains can be unpredictable!
