The 30 best hiking gifts for families (actually useful ones)

Hiking gift guides are often full of novelty carabiner mugs, joke T-shirts, and gadgets that never make it past the kitchen drawer. This one isn’t.

These are brilliant hiking gifts that I actually have bought. I promise, I actually own (and use!) every single one of them.

They work for real families who hike. After years of trailing kids up mountains, through forests, and across entire islands (in the case of the GR221 in Mallorca!), I’ve developed a fairly ruthless eye for kit that earns its place in the (as light as possible) backpack.

So this list focuses on the practical, functional, and fun things that genuinely improve family hiking trips — not clutter up your cupboards.

It covers the whole gang; adults, kids, and families who simply want days in the hills to be smoother, comfier, and a bit more exciting.

And as always: these recommendations come from real use, real trails, and real kids with limited patience and impressive (and something fussy) eating capacities.

🥾 Actually useful hiking gifts for adults

Practical, packable, genuinely worth owning. No novelty “adventure” mugs here.

🫧 Sea to Summit washing line

The tiny, clever line that dries everything

This little no-pegs-needed washing line weighs almost nothing and stretches between trees, bunk beds, hut beams… whatever you’ve got. Brilliant for airing socks (if you dare), drying sun shirts, washing pants. Packs down to the size of a matchbox; earns its keep on every overnight trip.

🔪 Tiny Victorinox pen knife

Cabin-baggage friendly

Perfect for cutting fruit, slicing cheese, or fixing kit. Small enough to go everywhere; sensible enough not to get confiscated (seriously, you can go through airport security with these tiny ones!)

💧 Nalgene bottle

Indestructible hydration

A classic for good reason. Wide mouth, tough plastic, and excellent for both day hikes and long multi-day routes. Can also be used as a hot water bottle at night (don’t get a copy as it won’t be suitable for this!)

☕ Wacaco portable espresso machine

For the coffee purist who refuses to rough it

This was a gift for my husband, who is… let’s say particular about his coffee. I wondered if it would be one of those gadgets that ends up getting left in a drawer. But no — he actually uses it. It produces a surprisingly good shot, needs no batteries, and works anywhere on the trail as long as you can boil water. It’s not the lightest, so don’t bring it if pack weight is important, but it’s perfect for espresso snobs who insist that instant coffee is “an abomination” even at 2,000 metres.

🔥 Jetboil

For coffee, noodles, and emergency kid meals

A bit of a splurge, but brilliant on multi-day routes or camping trips.  Boils water in lightning-fast 120 seconds. And all packs down into it’s own pot. I used mine a lot in Mallorca, mostly when the kids weren’t thrilled by hut dinner options and I needed to boil water to rehydrate expedition meals. I don’t bring this on every hut to hut trip, but it’s so handy if food access or tastiness isn’t a given. Pair this with Decathlon expedition meals or the espresso machine …

🚰 Water filter

Freedom to refill anywhere

Ideal for long-distance hiking or when you’re unsure about mountain stream quality (which you should be everywhere, as you never know what’s pooped / died in the stream upstream)! I use this exact one a lot on our hut hikes; especially with kids – I’d rather be safe than sorry if I’m uncertain about the water source.

🗺️ Waterproof map + accessory case

Not just for maps

Great for passports, cash, and travel documents on longer trips. You should even cram your phone into it in a downpour! Waterproof and endlessly practical.

👕 Patagonia Capilene tee

Lightweight, fast-drying, and comfortable

Super comfy, lightweight, warm weather tee; ideal for hut-to-hut trips where you rotate the same top for several days. I have two of these, and love them. You can rinse it out in the evening and it’ll be dry by morning.

🧶 Merino wool hiking tee

Warmth without weight

Regulates temperature, resists odour, and lasts for years. I am a bit obsessed with merino. It really takes way longer to smell than any other fabric. And it’s cool in hot weather, but if you layer it up it’s really warm, even when it’s damp, so great for shoulder season hiking. This women’s Decathlon one is great value and has quick dry mesh fabric under the arms and on the back, which I love.

🦯 Hiking poles

Game changers on steep ascents and knee-saving descents

A decent pair of poles makes long days far more comfortable; they protect your knees on downhills and give a helpful boost on climbs. Carbon poles are the dream; they’re noticeably lighter, which makes a real difference over multiple days, and they reduce arm fatigue when you’re carrying a bigger pack. Yes, they’re pricier than aluminium ones but once you try them, it’s hard to go back.

🔋 Power bank

For long days, offline maps, and hut trips

Because your phone will run out right when you need to check the route. This is my favourite power bank.

A girl sits on a wooden picnic bench wearing a maroon quilted hiking jacket with a hood. The cozy and insulated design makes this jacket a thoughtful hiking gift for colder climates.

🧥 Lightweight down jacket

Packable warmth

Stuff it into its own pocket and clip it anywhere. Essential for early starts, windy summits, and chilly hut terraces. Even on hut to hut hikes where it’s been so hot during the day that I couldn’t imagine needing warm layers, I’ve been happy to have my down jacket in the evenings!

Soups, pasta, snacks on the go — a spork handles everything. Great paired with expedition meals or for keeping in a daypack for spontaneous picnics.

A red and orange Simond headlamp with an adjustable strap and a front-facing LED light, designed for hands-free use. Compact and essential, this makes one of the most practical hiking gifts for nighttime or early-morning treks.

🔦 Headtorch

For hut corridors, early starts, and emergency situations

Reliable, bright, and lightweight. Both the kids and I have this exact headtortch! A proper must-have for any family that tries a night in a mountain refuge.

🔭 Silva monocular

Amazing for wildlife spotting

Compact enough for kids to use, and surprisingly powerful. Brilliant on ridge walks or anywhere with the chance of birds of prey, marmots, or mountain goats (so everywhere in the Alps!)

Five packets of Forclaz freeze-dried hiking meals laid out on a carpet, including apple and redcurrant porridge, mashed potatoes with minced meat, and rice with chicken curry. These lightweight, high-calorie meals make practical hiking gifts for long treks.

🍲 Decathlon expedition meals

Surprisingly tasty, genuinely useful

A lifesaver on long days or multi-day hikes. Kids can be picky; having an emergency meal ready to rehydrate has saved more than one hut evening for us (especially in Mallorca where the rifugi food wasn’t very kid-friendly). Pair this with a Jet Boil as you’ll need hot water! My kids particularly love the chicken curry!

🧒 Brilliant hiking gifts for kids

Tried, tested, and approved by small people (my own kids!) with short legs and strong opinions.

Two children wearing large hiking backpacks, one navy blue and one deep purple, stand on a roadside with mountain views in the background. Their colorful, well-equipped gear highlights functional hiking gifts for young adventurers.

🎒 Decathlon 28L kids’ backpack

Just the right size for growing hikers – this backpack is my very best purchase for my kids!

We’ve had these backpacks for 4 years and they’re still getting loads of use. Comfortable straps, good pockets, and tough enough to survive being dumped on rocks. Big enough to carry full kit for a multi-day hut to hut hike; not so big they complain, small enough to count as a “personal item” on a no frills airline (as long as they’re not stuffed full).

💧 Collapsible water bottle

Hydration made easy

I have one of these, and my daughter stole it all the time, so I got her her own! Fits easily in a backpack or jacket pocket, is weirdly satisfying to drink from, and doesn’t take up any room when empty.

An extendable hiking pole with a black handle, teal wrist strap, and measurement markings along the shaft. This supportive and adjustable pole is a useful hiking gift for balance and joint support on uneven terrain.

🏔️ Kids’ hiking pole (Decathlon)

Because little legs love a boost

Shock-absorbing, adjustable, and excellent for building confidence on steeper paths. Especially good for keeping balance on downhills when the kids are carrying their own kit.

A bright blue and black mesh-back hiking cap from Quechua, featuring a topographic map design and mountain patch on the front. Lightweight and breathable, it's a stylish gift for sun protection on the trail.

🧢 Decathlon cap

Sun-shade for squinty eyes

Simple, breathable, loads of kid-friendly cool designs, and cheap enough not to cry if it gets left on a tree stump (or in a gondola, where I left both of my kids’ caps – these exact ones! We went to a local Decathlon and replaced them immediately…)

👟 Salomon trail shoes

Light, grippy, and kid-proof

A brilliant alternative to heavy boots on summer trails. Supportive enough for long days and perfect for energetic mountain goats. My kids wear these on all our adventures (and most of the time at home, too).

👖 Decathlon soft shell trousers

Stretchy, comfy, and hard-wearing

Great for breezy days, scrambling, and hut-to-hut trips. Water resistant for rain showers and stream splashing, and warm enough for shoulder season hiking. Another Decathlon favourite which we’ve now had in multiple sizes as the kids grow.

👕 Sunshirt

All-day UV protection

Perfect for long days in the hills; avoids the battle of reapplying sunscreen every 20 minutes. We discovered these last year and they have been really great in hot weather.

🧦 Mountain Warehouse merino base layers

Warm, breathable, and not too pricey

Great base layers for kids who run hot, cold, and everything in between. Also double brilliantly as pjs on hut hiking adventures.

🍪 Stroopwafels

High-energy snacks that kids actually eat

Sweet, portable, and perfect for fuelling uphill legs. They don’t melt, crumble, or get rejected for being “too healthy.” Great for morale, great for quick calories, and an easy way to keep everyone moving between huts.

🎁 That’s a wrap

Hiking gifts don’t have to be flashy or faddy. The best ones earn their place in the backpack; they make the day smoother, the kids happier, and the hills more inviting.

I promise I (or my kids) actually own every single one of these recommendations and they all have a place on my packing list (maybe not for every hike, but I use them all loads!)

Whether you’re shopping for your own crew or looking to surprise a family who loves the outdoors, these are the things I’d genuinely recommend because we’ve bought them, used them, and relied on them from Austria to Mallorca and everywhere in between.

And yes — as I find more genuinely useful kit or excellent hut-friendly ideas, I’ll keep this list updated.
