The park offers a mix of trails for different skill levels, from beginner-friendly routes to more advanced technical trails. A leisurely walk from Mutters along the Panoramaweg will take you to the Natterersee, a peaceful alpine lake perfect for swimming and picnicking. Day trips to Innsbruck: What to see and do
A short tram ride brings you right into the heart of Innsbruck, where you’ll find a mix of history, culture, and outdoor fun.
1. Visit the Old Town
A stroll through Innsbruck’s Old Town is a must. Its medieval streets are full of charm, with colourful buildings, arcaded walkways, and cosy cafés. Don’t miss the Golden Roof (Goldenes Dachl), Innsbruck’s most famous landmark. Built in the 15th century, it gleams with over 2,500 gilded copper tiles. The Old Town is also a great spot for a leisurely lunch or a mid-morning ice cream or coffee – there are plenty of outdoor seating options for soaking up the city’s atmosphere.

2. Ride the Nordkette Cable Car
Start with the modern Hungerburgbahn, which is a hybrid cable and funicular railway, bringing passengers from the Innsbruck Congress station in the city centre up to the Hungerburg district. It takes you over the river Inn, and then sharply ascends up the initial slopes to the Hungerburg district, via the stop for the Alpine Zoo, in just eight minutes. Get off to visit the Alpine Zoo, and then hop back on the funicular (or walk – it’s about a 30 minute walk) up to the top station.
Once there, just a few steps lead across Hermann-Buhl-Platz, named after the world-famous Austrian alpinist, to the Seegrubenbahn valley station. From here, take the cable car to the Hafelekar peak, the “Top of Innsbruck” at 2,300 metres above sea level. The breath taking 360° panorama, with Innsbruck – the capital of the Alps – on one side and the rugged Karwendel Nature Park on the other, is guaranteed to leave a lasting impression.
Be prepared for cool weather up at the top, even in the height of summer (bring a long sleeved top, at least!)

It’s quite an expensive excursion but it’s a fantastic view, and you can buy a “Top of Innsbruck Plus” ticket which includes entrance to the Alpine Zoo. Or if you can go before 9:30 am or after 3:00 pm you can buy a ticket with a 20% discount – a good way to save a bit of money!
3. Explore the Alpine Zoo
The Alpine Zoo, the highest in Europe, is a great way to learn about the region’s wildlife. Set on a hillside overlooking Innsbruck, the zoo focuses on alpine species, so you’ll spot animals like ibex, lynx, wolves, and golden eagles. It’s an ideal outing for nature lovers and families, offering a mix of education and outdoor exploration with stunning views of the city below.

4. Visit Swarovski Crystal Worlds
Just a short drive from Innsbruck, Swarovski Crystal Worlds is a magical and surreal attraction that combines art, design, and imagination. You’ll find highlights like the crystal dome, the iconic giant water-spouting head, an outdoor playground and beautifully landscaped gardens. Inside, interactive installations and dazzling displays bring the world of crystals to life – a unique experience that’s fun for all ages. There’s an amazing four level playtower, a carousel & labyrinth there as well.
You can easily reach Swarovski Crystal Worlds by public transport. Take the Swarovski Kristallwelten Shuttle from Innsbruck’s main train station, which runs several times a day and drops you right at the entrance. Alternatively, regional buses (Route 4125) connect Innsbruck with the town of Wattens, where Swarovski Crystal Worlds is located.
